Does anyone have any experience with Tut's 'Silver Streak' Ethernet for
Macintosh network connectors, promising standard Ethernet over flat PhoneNet
cable with no hubs required (cf UTP.)? Is this really a breakthrough or are
there hidden drawbacks,m incompatibilites etc. How does it compare to Etherwave
from Farallon?

Teach me to read a FAQ every now and then. Sorry for a self-followup, just
thought I'd mention that a program called xanim is available at ftp.x.org
that will play QuickTimes as well as lots of other animation formats. Found
it in ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/news.answers/graphics/animation-faq

Connecting the Geometry Viewer's image output port to the Image Viewer,
you can use the "Store Images" option in the "Action" menu to store up
a sequence. This works pretty well, provided you've got the memory (which
you do). You can subsequently write the image sequence to disk, which
might be useful if you want to keep it.

Related question:

I've been messing around with converting animated sequences to QuickTime
for play on a Macintosh, and to MPEG. I'm finding that MPEG plays back
very slowly on Sparc 2's because of the heavy compression. I'd REALLY like
to be able to play back the QuickTime format on a Sun workstation, does
anyone know where I might find a Unix-based (not just SGI) utility that
reads and/or plays QuickTime?

Thanks.

Hello,

I'm using Phil McDonald's show_flow module from the International
AVS Center. This is just the package I've been looking for, since hedgehog
didn't have all the functionality I would like.

However, I'm having trouble with the "arrows" mode. Maybe it's just me
(and some kind soul can explain things to me), but in 3D, the arrow heads don't
look like arrow heads to me! They look more like 4 lines originating
from the end of the arrow, but not in the direction of the arrow.

I'll try drawing it with a crude graphic:

/_ <--- This is the arrow "head", (it actually has 4 lines)
    | <-- Tail of arrow
    |

And, in this example, the arrow should be pointing up. Can anyone explain
this notation, or what I'm missing?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. They look fine in 2D (i.e. if the field coming into show_flow is 2D)

Hi.

I heard that no-one makes a true 24bit color X term.
Tektronix highest class X term offers a "pseudo true
color" by converting 24bit color into 256 color. The
256 colors are choosen over a 16million palette.

I would really like to know what kind of X terms (if any)
people out there use for imaging and visualization
using AVS. Maybe the dithering caused by an 8bit X term
wouldn't look as nasty as I think. I'd like to know what
peoples' experiences and ideas on this matter are.

Hi all!

I am sure I am not seeing a big mistake I am doing while developing a
program.
The module works well during the first run, while on the second run
(for example after changing a parameter) I get this message

connect: Broken pipe
/usr/avs/avs_library/mongo: AVSbuild_tcp_connection: s = 13, port = 33653, host_addr = 961d384d
avs: send_direct: Direct data transfer failed.
from read field.user.1 (host addr 961d384d, pid 7911)
   to module_name.user.22 (host addr 961d384d, pid 8401)
Flow exec input input_field_name to module module_name.user.22 is missing
Procedure number out of range: 1537

The module is declared as "dead". It works well again if I invoke
"read field" again.

What am I doing wrongly? Is there any particuliar problem with fields'
pointers?

thank you very much

maurizio

I've never been fond of the "default" HSV colormap in AVS, cause the
colors to me eye don't smoothly grade from one to another. Here's a
alternative colormap that works better for me, and maybe for you! This
is the "jet" colormap, exported from Matlab. Just save this puppy and
use the "read" button on the "generate colormap" module to read it in!

Hi,
I'm trying to compile the ucd_comp module from the IAC on a Sun
workstation running SunOS 4.1.3. We have gotten it to work successfully
on an SGI workstation. Has anybody gotten it to work on a Sun workstation?

If so, what did you do? Thanks, email please,

Can loops be implemented in CLI?

Can CLI read data from a file? For example... I want to put labels on
an image, which are listed in a text file. Can I say read line one
and use CLI commands to create and transform the label, move to the
second line and so on...

Thanks,

Does anybody have experience in integrating avs-files into the khoros-system? All suggestions concerning this topic are welcome. Our aim is to integrate an avs-file for matrix-visualisation.

                   ** ANIMATION CONTEST 94 **
                          ** UPDATE **

Due to popular demand, or at least quite a few requests,
the deadline for entering your animations in the "Animation
Contest 94" has been extended. The new and final deadline is
December 31, 1994.

Anyone considering entering the contest should send
there entry in as soon as possible. Please don't wait until the
last minute. This makes things harder on us. It also makes
shipping your tape to us more expensive for you (having to send
next day air etc.)

We have received alot of very nice looking and creative
animations and would like to thank everyone that has sent in
entries up to this point. We will be sending confirmation
letters to all of you letting you know that we have received
your entries. If anyone would like to know right away just ask
us through E-Mail at the internet address below.

We still have plenty of room left for more animations/
entries so if you are having thoughts about entering and
would like FREE ADVERTISING for yourself and/or your company
then send in your entry/s now. Your entry could be anything
from flying logos to mini-movies, whatever you want.

This contest is completely free to enter. There
are absolutely no hidden charges whatsoever. All you need
to do is put your animations to tape, and send us a copy.
For those of you not able to get your animations to tape but
would like to enter the contest, we are helping as many people
as we can by having them send their data by floppy disk or by
modem and putting it to tape for them. If you are interested
in doing something like this (and have no way to get your
animations to tape) send us some E-mail and let us know your
situation. We will do the best we can to help.

For complete rules and information on the contest or for
specific questions or comments we can be reached at the internet

The block table is a set of interpolation weights used to compute values of
vector fields at locations that aren't exactly on a grid point where data
exists. The streamlines, hedgehog, and particle advector modules are all
examples of modules using block tables IF your input data has an irregular
coordinate system.

Some of these modules use a little smarts and check the "mesh_id" value
in the field structure. If you generate multiple data sets with the same
coordinates, you'll want to set the same value for mesh_id, so that these
modules don't need to recompute the block table, which is time consuming.
Look in the Developer's guide for more info about mesh_id.

Some of these modules still don't bother looking at mesh_id, (particle
advector and ribbons are two I'm aware of) which can be a nuisance, but I
imagine that version 5.02 coming out soon will fix most of this.

Apparently AVS/Express will have some features to address the issue of sharing
meshes between multiple data sets also, but I'm not really up on Express.

I haven't compiled the ucd_comp module, but I have compiled numerous
others for the SunOs 4.1.3. Perhaps if you gave us a hint as to the
problems you encountered, we might be able to help.

P.S. If the problem is a linker error complaining about ansi_fflush,
then include the following:

Yogesh,

ImageMagick, the San Diego Image Tools, and/or netpbm(plus)
should help you.

John Cristy's ImageMagick (convert) is from:
ftp.x.org:contrib/applications/ImageMagick/ImageMagick-3.0.tar.gz

The San Diego Image Tools (imconv) from SDSC at:
 ftp.sdsc.edu:/pub/sdsc/graphics/imtools/<platform>

The netpbm(plus) package also contains many standalone
conversions. Highly recommended, this package is available
by anon ftp from ftp.x.org:R5contrib/netpbm-1mar1994.tar.gz.

FYI, these are all available as part of a public domain AVS
module at the IAC:

Description : This module reads an image from disk into AVS in any of a
variety of formats. Some of the formats which this module
supports are from San Diego Supercomputing Center's image

ImageMagick package, still others require tools from
GNU's Ghostscript, and the NetPBM package. Depending on
how the module is configured, it can read and about 30 to 40
image formats, including , AVS X, Alias, Apple Macintosh

formats in the READ_ANY_IMAGE module, with several new
formats added and improved support for several of the
original file types. Several sample images (gif, pict,
ppm, ps, rgb, rle, tiff, xwd, and yuv) are included with this
module for your testing purposes. Please note that this
module calls several executable files, including imconv,

Hi AVS-ers,

I would like to know how to control the plane used by one or more orthogonal
slicers simultaneously. This means changing the slice plane directions of all
linked orthogonal slicers with only one action. The tristate module appears
to be the right one, but I am not able to link it with the orthogonal slicers.
Can someone help me out ?

Thanks in advance, Rik

on my Quadra 700 with a 16" color screen. The program seems to start up
correctly but the color maps keep flaking out and the entire program
behaves strangely. (Explorer seems to work fine.) I've tried all the
different color maps given by the xdpyinfo command and I've run it with
-nohw -class X and so forth. Has anybody solved this problem? Will it
work better running from a Sun Sparc to a Mac? Is there a GL package for
the Mac?
Thanks.

The format is a little messed up here as UCLA's news system is jacked up right
now.

I understand the problem with porting the multiformat_io module.
I have source from SDSC for the imconv program, but the libsdsc library
does not come with source, so it's pretty useless as is. If it were
available I might have tried to fix the problems with the various
formats there and remake the READ_ANY_IMAGE (and the write module)
instead of starting anew. My suggestion is to clear out the SDSC
stuff from the multiformat_io source and just make it using the
ImageMagick material. If noone gets any satisfaction from SDSC I
may put out a diff to get rid of it, but this should be pretty
easy to edit in the c and header files as is. The Net-pbm-plus
stuff may be able to do some or all of the conversions in the
module that ImageMagick doesn't do, but the interfaces to pipe
in and out of those conversions would need to be plugged in.
Possibly in a future release I (or anyone who wants to) can
rewrite the module to be done with the SDSC stuff and use the pbm
package exclusively instead. I apologize for the fact that this
module is such a bear to put together, but when it works, it's
pretty decent.

I'm sure I must be missing something, but I have always had
an annoying little problem with the "label" module distributed
with AVS 5.01 (running on a CRIMSON VGXT). The difficulty is
that the label is often obscured by the object it is labelling.
Is there some way of controlling the "depth" (ie distance
perpendicular to the viewing plane) of the label to avoid this?
I am thinking that I would like to "raise it up" so that it is
in front of the object.

Thanks,

You may not be missing something. For labeling I use the
Generate_label routine available at the IAC. It works well and
although it is set up to give you a label at Z=0, it would be
easy to modify (by adding a Z position parameter) to allow full
positioning in 3-space.

Hope this helps

Hi everybody,
I did an animation with the AVS Animator, which I want to save as
an mpeg file. To do this I got the source code for the write_ppm
and write_yuv modules from the International AVS Center, but it's
very difficult for me to compile them.
Does anyone know a site from where I can ftp compiled versions of
these modules (I have an SGI Indigo running under IRIX 5.2)?
Thank you in advance

Hi

I have just started using avs, (from using khoros) and am attempting to import
a raw file. The raw format consists of a sequence of bytes each byte representing
a pixel value. (0-255). I managed to do this using the file descriptor etc.., however,
when viewing the file, the number of grey levels used seems to be drastically
reduced. I tried to change the colormap etc... but cannot seem to get the correct
display. Any ideas to what is going on.

Also, is there a way to incorporate c++ into avs ?

Thanks alan

Loops cannot be implemented in CLI (to the best of my knowledge)
The only thing you can read in from file using CLI is a network file,
but a network file can simply be a list of CLI commands.

The way I'd do it is to write a module that reads in the stuff from file
(a coroutine, with no in or out ports) and fires CLI commands to AVS
(alias your image viewer module, so you can refer to it as, say 'imgvwr'
rather than 'image viewer.user.12' , as the number may change)

Hope this helps.

You can move the Z position of the whole geometry, (Perspective button in the
Goem viewer controll panel allows you to see it change).

Shift right mouse moves the geom back and forward.

I thought there was a Z control on the 'label' module, but discovered that
there wasn't. I think it can be implemented (see GEOMadd_label in the

I am trying to write a module that controls a scatter plot. The module
writes a field output which can be read in by bubbleviz, to create a
scatter plot, using a network very similar to the example in the
bubbleviz documentation. The problem is that the 'Radius' parameter on
bubbleviz seems to change when a new field is sent to it.

Does anyone know how the value of Radius is calculated? I need to know so
I can work out how to control it automatically (making the parameter an
input port etc.etc.)

Instead of just displaying a streakline, how about modifying the
transformation matrix (i.e. geom_set_matrix ... ) so it appears
that the user is fixed to a fluid particle?

I have a home-grown version of "ucd streamlines," so I have the
vertices that make-up the streakline. Next, each segment can be
viewed as a desired view vector and I can compute the transformation
matrix that gets me from the current view to the desired view. The rest
is just details( i.e. appropriate scale factor, etc. ).

Ths seems like the "hard way." Anybody have any suggestions?

We do medical imaging (MRI) and have very large data sets (on the
order of 100MB); we are wondering, once this raw data set has been
converted to a native AVS_field, how read_field will read in this large
data set. Specifically does read_field use mmap (or a similar facility)
to create a virtual memory mapping instead of reading the entire file
into RAM? We'd like to use read_field but we are worried about bogging
our system down with swapping. Any comments or suggestions?

Hi all,

I'm having trouble with animating a crop'd field. My field has the
following characteristics:

ndim=2
dim1=100
dim2=1
nspace=2
veclen=1
<...>

I don't have any problems animating, but I keep getting an error
message from the crop module when I select my field to be read in. The
error message is:

  Protocol failure: Assuming module died
Restart will restart the module with default parameters
Restart Same will restart module with current parameters
    (which may kill it again)

This is a fatal error with
Sender: crop.user.10
Function: FLOWexec_remote_module

I also got the following in my shell:

LUI_DialSetParameters(): illegal values!!!
                value = 0.000000  low = 0.000000  high = 0.000000

LUI_DialSetParameters(): illegal values!!!
                value = 0.000000  low = 0.000000  high = 0.000000

I tried connecting crop and read field alone and still got the message,
so I don't think my other modules are causing this error. Does anyone know
what this means? I'm really stuck! :)

Thanks!

AVS is using 256 entry colormaps, which includes all colors and grays.
Unless you are running on a computer with 24bit display (which I am not,
and don't know much about), then you can't do a whole lot to change the
number of discrete gray levels.

However, if you are displaying to the image viewer, you can turn on the
dithering option and this may improve things somewhat.

As for C++, I don't use it. But, in the 'AVS 5 Update' manual, there is a
section on ANSI C and C++ modules.

Hope this helps

How can I get the physical values rather than the gridpoints
on the axis of the Graph Viewer? Putting min_ext,and max_ext
in the header of the .fld file does not work, neither does
putting in coordinates of the axis. With 'print field' it does
show the right physical values but they do not appear in the
Graph Viewer window, nor do they in the dials.

It seems a minor thing but ot really annoys me.

Hi,

I am just interested in finding out if anyone has AVS V5.02 running on a
DEC Alpha system using OSF/1 V3.0.

If so, were there any problems?

Gentelmen,

We are trying to use AVS to look onto Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) images.
We suceeded to read a file, see as the gray scale image or save as a 2D-field.
How to see it as a 3D surface ?
Is it there anybody using AVS for AFM, STM or other microscopy, and
willing to share his experience ?

Thanks a lot,
(E-mail preferred)

Try the following:

Transform the scatter 3-D points using "bubbleviz" and then "scatter to ucd"
into ucd-Data. Then with the help of "ucd to geom" and "ucd isolines" in the
geometry viewer as isolines.

Hope this helps,

I have a network that produces three sequences of (x,y) points
which I want to view superimposed on the same plot and with each
sequence drawn as a connected sequence of points. The problem is that
the graph viewer only accepts a single data set in each port. Is
there a solution (short of writing a "graph funnel" coroutine module
that uses CLI commands to control the graph viewer and to use multiple
output commands to send its multiple input fields through to the graph
viewer)?

Thanks for any thoughts,

- dave

I have six rectilinear 2D fields covering the same coordinate
space. These represent six variables recorded from the same space. I
need to view and manipulate these in the image viewer (geometry viewer
won't do as I need to view the exact values, not values of an
interpolated mesh) so that zooming and translating operations on any
of the images (fields) are applied to all the images. I also need to
be able to restrict the view port size so that I can zoom into a small
portion of the image and still see that portion for all six images.
Anyone know how to do this?

Thanks for any thoughts,

- dave

I have tried to compile these files after I obtained libsdsc.a and libim.a
from ftp.sdsc.edu. But I couldn't compile "Read_any_image", because
there are some troubles with "ImFileFRead" and "TagTableAlloc".
It sends error messages as:

ld: Undefined symbol

_BinQMachine <= this is from TagTableAlloc.
   _PackBits
   _ImLzwEncode
.etc.

If the bug mentioned above is any relation with this trouble, please tell me
what shouled be done to resolve it.

Thanks.
