MCNC At A Glance
"Make a difference in North Carolina"

MCNC was established in 1980 as a private, nonprofit corporation with the
support of state leaders and the North Carolina General Assembly. In
cooperation with its partners in industry, universities and state
government, MCNC has helped to establish a national reputation for North
Carolina as a state that fosters research, education and development of
electronic and information technologies.

As a leader in the use of these advanced technologies, MCNC supports North
Carolina education and the state's competitiveness for economic growth and
high-quality, high-wage jobs. MCNC operates two technology divisions
working together toward our corporate vision: make a difference in North
Carolina.

The Electronic Technologies Division focuses on the development of
leading edge technologies in the areas of integrated circuit design and
fabrication, electronic systems design, micro structure fabrication, and
advanced packaging and interconnection. Our capabilities also include the
operation of an advanced analytical laboratory, a commercial class 1 wafer
fabrication facility, and test and characterization services. Our staff
has achieved international recognition in several areas from the design of
the world's first integrated circuit exceeding one million transistors to a
unique patent position on advanced packaging and interconnection.

The Information Technologies Division manages an audio/video network
that connects classrooms and teleconference facilities at ten universities
and four medical schools across the state. In addition, the data network
links more than 10,000 computers with each other and with a worldwide
network. Our scientists are involved in communications research on a
high-speed network for medical uses and network analysis tools. The
national clearinghouse for networked information retrieval tools is housed
here.

The Division also provides some of the Southeast's most powerful
computers and state-of-the art facilities for turning complex mathematical
models into computer-generated images called scientific visualization.
Through on-site contact and remote access, we offer business and academic
users access to advanced equipment, expertise and training in high-speed,
high-power computing and visualization. The international center for
specialized visualization tools is housed here.

Throughout its years of service, MCNC has provided shared facilities,
equipment and expertise for industries and universities throughout North
Carolina. These scientific resources, coupled with the state's commitment
to advanced technology, are vital for researchers and scientists on
campuses and in businesses across the state.

According to MCNC President Matt Kuhn, "As MCNC looks to the future, our
mission is to continue to build on our accomplishments and to accelerate
the innovative use of electronic and information technologies in education
and industry. MCNC is making a difference in North Carolina."
